Costumes for the Play, 2025
Costumes for a play based on Eliza Kącka’s autobiographical book, directed by Anna Augustynowicz, produced at the Gustaw Holoubek Drama Theater in Warsaw. The play tells the story of the relationship between a mother and daughter who perceive reality differently, and of their attempts to develop their own language of communication beyond social norms and predefined definitions.
I designed dark, woolen uniforms with rigorous, seemingly closed-off constructions. Hidden within them are folds and additional layers of fabric that are revealed only in motion. The costumes establish a shared visual order but do not blur the differences between the characters. Their design reflects the tension between the need for control and the impossibility of fully describing another person’s experience.
In her review of *When There Is No Speech*, Magda Piekarska described the performance as a precisely constructed mechanism devoid of random elements, which, despite its formal discipline, retains its emotional power. The production was presented, among other venues, at the 31st International Festival of Pleasant and Unpleasant Arts in Łódź and in the Inferno competition at the 18th Divine Comedy International Theater Festival in Kraków.
