“We’re bored in the city; there’s no longer a temple of the sun.
The children of functionalism, offered a choice between love and the garbage chute, humbly choose the latter.”*
In “Outline of a New Urbanism,” Gilles Ivain proposes an urban revolution—a city designed for ceaseless drifting, a city born of imagination and dreams.
I’m from Warsaw. This city is made up of places that are mine and not mine.
The square by Zodiak is part of my personal history, a history of urban drifting. Around that square, I often encountered various urban outlaws. From my teenage years, I remember it as a hangout for people suspended in time.
People who didn’t waste time, but killed it.
A square is a place we pass by, but it can also be a space for encounters—both in the here and now and those yet to come—as well as a space for risk and play.
“Apparitions and Ecstasies in the Square” is a two-day performance during which the square will become a space “reserved for the freedom of play.” Marta Ziółek, as Mc Ratlady, will guide passersby through street movements and apparitions—a situationist dance of the imagination. She will be accompanied on this trance-like journey by DJ Zoi Michailova and designer Tomasz Armada. Other urban rebels will also support her during the event.
The event is part of a performance program for Warsaw’s squares organized by the Puszka Foundation as part of the three-year research project “Warsaw’s Squares (to be reclaimed)” – www.placewarszawy.pl. The program accompanies the exhibition *Places: Instructions for Use* at ZODIAK—the Warsaw Architecture Pavilion (June 29–September 22, 2019). https://www.dwutygodnik.com/artykul/8426-pochwala-dziwnosci.html Photographs by Szymon Rogiński
