IWONA, PRINCESS OF BURGUNDY

Costumes for the Play, 2026

Costumes for Witold Gombrowicz’s play *Iwona, Princess of Burgundy*, directed by Anna Augustynowicz and staged at the Ateneum Theater in Warsaw. The production portrays the court as a closed system based on hierarchy, appearances, and imposed roles. Iwona’s arrival exposes its violence, hypocrisy, and fear of difference.

I designed a timeless wardrobe, incorporating elements reminiscent of the attire of the prince, the court, and the servants, as well as contemporary clothing styles. The costumes are primarily in shades of gray and black. Filip’s red shirt stands out clearly against this backdrop. Iwona’s black dress and dark sunglasses underscore the mechanism by which a specific image is imposed on the heroine. The entire production is integrated into Marek Braun’s austere set design and Wojciech Kapela’s monochromatic projections.
